I come from a middle-class open-minded family, my family always imbibed in me the principals of equality between men and women. It was only after i got into a job, i started gaining exposure to the outside world and i realize some or the other way, we females are considered a "commodity". I am writing this blog in lot of anger and dissipation to see how India is failing to transform itself.
India is a powerful country in terms of the brains we give to the world, in terms of our values and principles. But, then i see the facts which just make me bow my head with shame : male - female ratio being skewed especially in states like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan. Everytime, i tune in to a news channel, i come across injustice , crime incidents with girls.
Few years back - Jessica Lal, Arushi's case, Aruna Shanbaug ..

(source : News articles - Indian Express)
2010 - Around 480 Rape Cases in India
2011- 40 rape cases in mere 2 months, NCR being the leader in arena ...
(source: IBN Live)
- Women Day's (8th March) top news - Radhika Tanwar shot dead in public place just because she refused to get in to a relationship with a stalker ?
- 9th March , 77 - yr old lady being raped by rickshaw puller in daytime again in our Capital.
- 15th March, deadbody of 25 yr old girl found in a briefcase at mumbai railway station.
- and these are just the major ones...
I feel ashamed and scared at the same place. Years have passed, but alas no change in Indian Society.. Is this the value of an Indian Woman ?
Then, i sit back and realize; we are the "youth of India" and its our homeland. To Clean up the mess, its "us" who have to take few steps. I wont say we should pick a brick and hit the ministry of defense or something. But i perceive, we all can contribute in small but fruitful ways to change the game.
- I dont want to talk about politics, i am not the right person to comment on it. But yes, if we have some rules and regulations which are so strict that the next time any educated or illiterate person attempts to harass a girl, he should think twice .
- At the same time, i request every woman not to stay quiet, if she is being harassed by any means. Dont bother about society, about peer pressures. If you realize its building on you, raise the voice. We have full right to protest and live a life of deginity. If we can give 500% of love, be a mom, be a daughter, we do have a right to live life with some self - respect !!
- Female infanticide is a crime. I understand this blog cant be read by illiterates (obviously) , but the message can be followed and simultaneously conveyed to uneducated maids, the Washer-women, and so on (which i understand is the segment still following it). Atleast, we can make the world aware about stuff. Movies like "Lajja" have done a fab job to awaken the people, but folks the ratio remains skewed.
- Lastly, i request men, please dont accept things quietly, if things are happening in front of you.I dont say accept everything (i totally love the fact, men think more from head than heart and women vice versa, which is the essence of a companionship for a balanced relation) . But my request to all the guys is, Try to realize a girl leaves every relation to settle down with you, which i suppose is hardest in the world. Only thing, she expects is a little regard, love and acceptance.
I dedicate this blog to all the women esp my ex-maid who left everything and had to go back to her parents after 5 years of traumatic married life (Miss u Seema - Aunty) , my ex-Team Lead , who after 10 years of consistent physical abuse went down with nervous breakdown and today has finally stood up for herself and her 8 year old son . And also to all the women out there, who feel helpless looking at the things happening around them but cant do much but sigh at times !!
Please feel free to add actionable points which you think can be used in to improvise the present circumstances and which "Mango"-people can adopt !!

I completely agree to it. I believe women should start respecting themselves first as they say charity begins from home. People of this country need's to grow up.
Thought provoking !! And I think, the time has come when the YOUTH of India has got the realization. All that is needed now is a MOVEMENT ! Thanks to Social Media - we have a PLATFORM now.So, let's go for it...
i am in complete consensus with your thoughts. To root an evil out of society, i believe the major things to be changed is people's mentality and their outlook towards social system and values.
A few pointers to your suggestions:
1) Politics and regulations - Nothing can be done if implementation is not foolproof. E.g. if corruption act (already in place) would have been enforced exhaustively, I do not see any need for Anna holding the baton against Indian Polity.
There are numerous regulations in Indian Law prohibiting molestation, but when it comes to bringing the guilty to book, loopholes are the weapons in their defense. Take the example of Jessica Murder Case - yes, the victim was posthumously "awarded", but did her sister and parents really deserve the mental agony they were forced to go through..
Also, Honor Killing is a poisonous snake raising its hood in the society. Thousands of women are killed in the name of family "honor". Everyone knows it but complicity by family and the community strengthens the concept of women as property and the belief that violence against women is a family issue and not a judicial one.... Really Shameful
Hii, I came across your blog while writing a paper on the 'plight of indian women' in the present century. althoUgh it was only by fluke that I happened to read about it. i would say that your words truly have a lot fo power and you must not let the flame die out. it s only because of optimistic youth like you that we can think or conjure up a tomorrow that is safer for women like us. I was really interested and suprised at the dedications you made and WROTE about it especially the case of your helper. how many of us actually take time and sit with our helpers and try to understand 'just what is going wrong'. I am not sure of my paper and if the audience will even GET what I am trying to say 'since we are supposed to use really complicated words when we write literary stuff'. but your blog, so simply put and yet it was like a nail in the head.
I am reminded of so many women I meet and have met in the past, who hide such dreadful pasts behind their beautiful smiles. I just hope you can make some more of them smile in your life.
thanks for the post, it was a wonderful read and a 'BUFFET for thought'.

Ash : Thanks, I really appreciate you took time out to go through the blog. I put up in NCR and believe me i love India! Only point i wish we can improvise is Women Security and above all Open-Mindedness. Its been ages, India really needs to open up without loosing its traditional touch. Till date, we girls have to weigh what to wear and where to wear.
Rest assured, atleast i pray when i have kids i should not be worried when they r out of home !!
Anyhow, My blog has been just an effort to look for comments from people if there is really something we can do.
According to me Revolution starts at home, if there is a small little effort put in for safety of everyone around you (own families, maids - i understand you cant intervene in anyone's life but surely you can put illiterate people in touch with few consellors which is exactly what i did) and so on.. i think this country will be filled with expats more than indians !! I wish i could take this revolution to the outer world widout being touched by dirty politics which i am damn sure isnt feasible in this society!!
Well, recently in mumbai there was another such show of barbarity, im not sure if u have heard about it. a bunch of youngsters were beaten up and two killed, for defending a girl from being mobbed and molested. such is a current situation of the world's largest democracy.
Ash: Yea i know about the story!! Its ridiculous ya! People who try to bring about a change are themselves crucified and everyone is so damn selfish!
Still i believe there are lot many stories, lot many obstacles but i really wish we could find a break to the loop !!
